Dr. Nicos L. Kartakoullis
Is a faculty member and Director of the Centre for Leisure, Tourism and Sport Research and Development at Intercollege in Nicosia, Cyprus . He is a visiting Professor at the University of Ottawa in Canada , and a faculty member of the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama. For the past five years he has been an International Course Director for the Itinerant School of Management of the International Olympic Committee , and has provided consultancy services for sport development to more than 20 countries in all five continents. One of his major areas of research interest is the use of sport as a tool for building understanding, solidarity, friendship and trust in areas of conflict. He has published articles and made presentations worldwide in the areas of sport management and development, education, tourism and leisure. In 2000 he received the highest honors award from Michigan State University , East Lansing (The Joon S. Moon Distinguished Alumni Award) for his service in sport development in developing countries. Dr. Kartakoullis has also been a Fulbright Scholar. He received his BS (Honors) degree from Michigan State University . He holds postgraduate degrees (MEd., MSc and MBA) and received his PhD from the University of Southampton in the U.K.
Before his appointment at Intercollege, he served as Director of the Cyprus National Olympic Committee for eight years, and as a Board Member of the Cyprus National Olympic Academy and the Cyprus National Anti-doping Agency . He is a Member of the Rotary Club of Nicosia, Chairman of the Vocational Committee. Dr. Kartakoullis is the Co-Project Director of the pilot program that was funded through UNOPS for the summer of 2005.
