Doves Olympic Movement Summer Camp 2007
17 July - 25 July 2007
The International Youth Camp 2007 organized by the Doves Olympic Movement, in collaboration with the Center of Leisure, Tourism and Sports (CLTS), has been a great success. The camp took place in Agros from the 18th to the 25th of July and hosted a hundred and six younkers aged 13-16, from the Cypriot communities, and Jordan. The instructors and volunteers coming from Cyprus, the United States, and Sweden gave their own multicultural note to the activities that took place.
The program’s triptych included athletic, educational, and cultural activities. The camp participants had the unique opportunity to practice their favorite sport, while at the same time to get familiar with new sports that have not been introduced or adequately practiced in Cyprus, such as among others rugby, dodgeball, fistball, and speedminton.
Moreover, the educational part of the camp included presentations and workshops over a number of different topics, including among others Olympism, community service, computer technology, environmental awareness, human rights, and global citizenship. Furthermore, the participants had the chance to attend fun language lessons and have a first contact with the main languages spoken by the campers, i.e. Greek, Turkish and Arabic.
Beside the athletic and educational activities, and with the availability of the necessary technological and other equipment and materials, the participants were able to express themselves through the arts such as dance, music, pottery, and painting. The young participants were actively involved in the creation of a team that will organize future activities aiming in community service. For this reason, the young participants, under the guidance and assistance of their instructors shared their ideas, identified and proposed specific activities, and divided the responsibilities of each participant for the successful implementation of their ideas. The aim of the program is the development of active citizens that will not merely participate to what is happening in the society, but they will act to change the society they live in, including among others stereotypes, racism, and drug abuse. Through the various practices, our youth will build their lives on sound bases.
The program was funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) – Action for Cooperation and Trust (ACT). The camp came to its end on July 25, with the participants ready to carry out the future activities and action plans they defined. The activities will have an educational, entertainment and community service character. All these activities are open to the public.
