Doves Olympic Movement Camp, 26 July - 03 August 2006
The camp, which took place between 26 of July and 03 of August 2006, aimed at organizing sport and educational activities for 120 children (ages 12-16). The objective was to enhance multicultural interaction, global citizenship and problem solving skills. The whole philosophy of the project is that Olympism (blend of Sports, education, arts and culture) can become useful tool for personal growth and development. The Doves Project is based on the notion that Olympism can facilitate peace, understanding and strong bonds of friendships and collaboration among cross cultural and diverse populations. The sports activities of the camp included soccer, basketball, volleyball, martial arts, and badminton, while the educational activities raised awareness on several issues such as: human rights, environmental issues, technology, health and well-being, and conflict management. During the camp, all children had the opportunity to reflect in the theme areas of the Doves Project and suggested future initiatives. The 15 action plans, developed by the children were divided in four thematic areas: (a) Sports, (b) Historical Workshops and Excursions, (c) Social Gatherings and Charities and (d) Filming andCommunication.
Following the summer camp, the participants were involved in follow-up activities that gave them the opportunity to meet regularly and become active in areas they were interested in.
"Before coming here, I didn't know how Turkish Cypriots would be along with Greek Cypriots. I was wondering if they would argue and fight with us, and to be honest, I believed that some Greek Cypriots hated us. In fact, they (Greek Cypriots) believed the same for us! We were so wrong! I have a lot truly friends here and we taught to each other Greek and Turkish words. I believe that we will keep in contact and we will do everything so that everyone will realize that the words "Turk" and "Greek" do not mean anything. We are all humans and we all live on the same planet. We, the teenagers, deserve peace. We, the teenagers, want peace." (Mehmet)
